Shelton to join SI&A’s leadership team
Gerry Shelton, chief education consultant to the California State Assembly, has been named Vice President of Education Policy at School Innovations & Advocacy.
Jeff Williams, SI&A Chief Executive Officer made the announcement, saying Shelton will add enormous experience and skill to the largest consulting and advocacy firm for public schools in California.
Gerry Shelton brings to SI&A a wealth of expertise in education policy development and school finance that state leaders have counted upon for many years," said Williams. "Gerry's background is a perfect match for our firm given our unique expertise in both policy and finance in the K-12 education space."
Shelton, widely recognized for his depth of policy knowledge across K-12 public education and school finance, held a variety of positions at the California Department of Education from the early 1990s through 2006 - most notably as the CDE's Chief Financial Officer, where he had responsibility over developing the state budget as well as fiscal policy and education finance.
Prior to that, Shelton served on the faculty at the University of California, Davis and later served as an associate professor in economics specializing in state and local government finance and public policy at CSU Sacramento where he taught for 14 years.
"Having worked with Gerry during my tenure as State Superintendent of Public Instruction, I know the incredible capacity he has to offer local school agencies and all of the clients of SI&A on an array of issues they face every day," said Jack O'Connell, SI&A Chief Education Officer.
As Vice President for Education Policy, Shelton will provide guidance and leadership on education policy and fiscal issues for local school districts and county offices of education in addition to non-profit and private sector clients. He will also play a crucial role in arguably the most qualified and capable education advocacy team in the state.
"Gerry's direct experience working for the Legislature, his key role in writing education policy and budget language for the Assembly and as CFO of the California Department of Finance make him an indispensable resource on the legislative, political and fiscal developments impacting public schools...we couldn't be more thrilled to have him," said SI&A President Kevin Gordon.
SI&A serves an estimated 75 percent of California's students with one or more products annually. SI&A empowers and supports school districts with innovative programs that generate and protect revenue, achieve attendance and academic goals, streamline processes, and fulfill state and federal obligations. The firm delivers success through expertise in attendance improvement, drop-out prevention, categorical support, special education, mandates and advocacy.
